Genetic analysis of the modern Australian labradoodle dog breed reveals an excess of the poodle genome

A new study by Muhammad Basil Ali and colleagues shows that, genetically, the Australian labradoodle designer dog breed - developed from a cross of poodles and Labrador retrievers - is primarily poodle.

Sequential activation of Notch and Grainyhead gives apoptotic competence to Abdominal-B expressing larval neuroblasts in Drosophila Central nervous system

This study from Bakshi et al. highlights that Hox dependent neuroblast apoptosis in abdominal and terminal regions of Drosophila utilizes common molecular players (Hox, Grh and Notch), but seems to have evolved different molecular strategies to pattern the developing central nervous system.

Excess crossovers impede faithful meiotic chromosome segregation in C. elegans

In this study, Hollis and colleagues find that increasing crossover number during meiosis negatively impacts chromosome segregation by altering chromosome-associated structures, leading to misalignment of the chromosomes on the meiotic spindle. Their results highlight the importance of limiting crossover numbers to enable faithful chromosome segregation during sperm and egg development.

Serotonergic modulation of visual neurons in Drosophila melanogaster

In this work, Sampson and colleagues have found serotonin receptors expressed in all neuropils of the Drosophila melanogaster optic lobe and identified specific neurons involved in visual information processing that express serotonin receptors. Their data support a role for the serotonergic neuromodulation of interneurons in the Drosophila visual system.

Mapping gene flow between ancient hominins through demography-aware inference of the ancestral recombination graph

Using ARGweaver-D, Hubisz et al identify 3% of the Neanderthal genome which is likely derived from gene flow from ancient humans, and 1% of the Denisovan genome that may be traced to an unsequenced archaic hominin.

The evolution and functional divergence of the histone H2B family in plants

Jiang, Borg and colleagues report a systematic analysis of the histone H2B family in plants. The authors identify a new class of highly divergent H2B variants, H2B.S, that specifically accumulate during chromatin compaction of dry seed embryos in multiple species of flowering plants.

Introns mediate post-transcriptional enhancement of nuclear gene expression in the green microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

Baier et al characterize the dynamics of 33 endogenous and 13 non-native introns in C. reinhardtii, and their effect on gene expression as artificial insertions into codon optimized transgenes. They find that introns from different origins have the capacity to increase gene expression rates.
